Military & Veteran
In recent years, Northeast Passage has seen an increase in the demand for recreation services related to recently injured veterans and military personnel. Due to this demand, Northeast Passage has molded several of its programs to address the unique needs of this population.
We strive to create an open and welcoming environment for veterans in all of our programs and veterans are encouraged to participate in any of our regular offerings (with their family and friends, of course!). All programs are appropriate for both OEF/OIF veterans and those aging into (or with) disability. In addition, below are some examples of how we’re specifically serving veterans with disabilities:
VA Connection: Northeast Passage’s Community/Home Based Recreational Therapy program is offered as a value-added benefit through the Manchester, NH Veteran’s Administration. Members who receive services through the Manchester VA can receive Northeast Passage’s outpatient therapeutic recreation services free of charge. We are working on contracting with other VA’s in the region and hope to add additional sites soon.
This service is also available to members of the U.S. Family Health Plan at Martin’s Point Health Care.
UNH – Education & Sport Training: We are currently recruiting veterans and members of the Armed Forces with disabilities to attend the University of New Hampshire as student-athletes. Veterans with physical disabilities interested in pursuing Paralympic level competition can attend UNH and train with Northeast Passage through its Athlete Development Center . By attending UNH, students don’t have to choose between a top education and their sport. In addition, UNH provides support for veteran and active duty students, including G.I. Bill benefits and on-campus resources.
If you are interested in attending school, check out the American Council on Education’s resources for veterans.
Team & Individual Sports: Stay fit, be active, network with others – it’s all part of Northeast Passage’s regular competitive team and individual sports offerings. Use game strategy in sled hockey, defend the goal in quad rugby, hammer up a hill in Nordic skiing, learn about firearm adjustments in shooting sports, ride an adaptive cycle with family and friends, mentor other veterans – the sky’s the limit and we’ll help you get there.
Events: Northeast Passage has hosted several veteran-specific events including Paralympic Military Camps, Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project events, Disabled Sports USA’s Warfighter Sports Series (Three Notch Century) and water skiing for the New York Adaptive Water Sports Festival in Long Island, NY. We have also developed close relationships with New England veteran hospitals and we assist with several of their adapted sports programs and special events.

The mission of Northeast Passage is to create an environment where individuals with disabilities can enjoy recreation with the same freedom of choice, quality of life, and independence as their non-disabled peers.
