The Northeast Passage Wildcats formed in 2007, with the Maine (Casco Bay Navigators) and Massachusetts (Boston Pit Bulls) teams coming together to create Northern New England’s only competitive quad rugby team. The team practices weekly at the University of New Hampshire during the fall and winter seasons and competes in local, regional and national tournaments.
The team hosts an annual tournament at UNH and other events to raise awareness of the sport and support for the team. The NEP Wildcats consists of many new and returning players from around New England.
Quad rugby (or wheelchair rugby) is a full-contact sport – physical contact between wheelchairs is an integral part of the game. The game is played on an indoor basketball court with a volleyball. The object of the game is to score a goal by crossing the goal line with possession of the ball. Complex strategy for both offense and defense are imperative to win a game. All players have a disability that affects both their upper and lower limbs and men and women compete on the same team. Players are classified based on function and rugby chairs are customized for each individual, based on their rating and position on the team (offensive or defensive player).
Benefits of regular play include increased strength, endurance and independence. Both on and off the court, this program fosters camaraderie, physical fitness and leadership opportunities for all involved.
